Serious Security Hazards at the Federal Reserve Bank Go Unaddressed

$9 trillion in transactions exposed to risk. Serious, unaddressed security vulnerabilities at the Federal Reserve Bank — surfaced by our specialist, Michael Peros.

During a visit to the Federal Reserve Bank, Michael Peros was engaged to provide a proposal to assess and deliver professional bug-sweep services for the Bank. During that assessment, a critical structural concern came to light that called into question whether any prior sweep could have been conducted effectively.

"I asked how an effective bug sweep could have been conducted when the entrance to the conference room attic is obstructed," said Peros. This fundamental access issue meant that any previous sweep of the Federal Reserve conference rooms was incomplete at best — and potentially meaningless.

Contractual appointments per the RFP for bug sweeps were slated to coincide with eight meetings held throughout the year at the Bank. Despite Peros raising these concerns on record, the security hazards went unaddressed — leaving a facility that processes trillions of dollars in transactions exposed to potential eavesdropping and surveillance threats.

This case illustrates why credentials and process matter. A sweep is only as effective as the access it is granted — and only as trustworthy as the specialist conducting it.
