Henry Che-Chuen Yuen (Chinese: 袁子春; born April 7, 1948, in Shanghai, China) is the founder and former CEO of Gemstar-TV Guide International. He earned a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Caltech and briefly worked there and at New York University before obtaining a law degree from Loyola Law School.
In 1986, Yuen founded Gemstar, gaining recognition for his aggressive patent litigation tactics, which led to him being dubbed a “patent terrorist.” Conversely, he was also praised as “the Bill Gates of TV” for securing a lucrative settlement with Microsoft involving royalties and advertising revenue from WebTV and Ultimate TV set-top boxes. In 2001, he stated, “In business, where I am right now, the only rules that exist are the ones you make.”
After merging Gemstar with TV Guide, Yuen faced criticism for devising complex and impractical business plans disconnected from the media industry’s realities. He was dismissed in 2003 following revelations of revenue manipulation and accounting irregularities. In 2006, a federal court found him guilty of securities fraud, ordering him to pay over $22 million in penalties and barring him from serving as an officer or director of any public company . As of April 25, 2007, his whereabouts were unknown
