Years ago, I stood in Auschwitz-Birkenau with Benjamin Orenstein, a man who survived 8 concentration camps. He turned to me and said: “If one day you hold an important position, and someone asks you to do something that goes against your conscience, say ‘no’ right away. Because after that… it will be too late.” This conversation led me to question what think we know about evil, violence, and responsibility. We’re saturated with simplified stories that divide the world into: → Perpetrator vs. savior → Victim vs. aggressor → Evil vs. good These narratives comfort us. They organize reality. They point fingers. But they don’t describe reality. Reality is messier! More twisted, more entangled. And most of all, it implicates us. We need to understand responsibility in an entangled world: Responsibility = degree of awareness + degree of impact + degree of choice. This isn’t about universal guilt or generalized excuses. 👉 It’s about recognizing that once you SEE, you can no longer pretend not to. The question: what do you choose to do with what you know?
