Man Places Camera in Bathroom to Watch Daughters, Feels Guilty
In Australia, a man deceived and hurt his family in one of the worst ways imaginable: he set up a hidden camera in his own bathroom with the purpose of secretly filming his daughters as they dressed and undressed, used the bathroom, and took showers. According to his most recent public statements, he now says he regrets his actions and the pain he has caused his daughters, but he still cannot explain why he did what he did, a sign of possible mental instability.
Last June, Adelaide Police raided the family’s western suburbs home under suspicion that the 50 year old father had been downloading and watching child pornography. Upon this raid, the police discovered over 2,000 child pornography files on his computers in addition to several hours of videos of his own daughters dressing and showering.
Robert Ford, the prosecuting attorney for the case, says that the hidden camera had been hidden on a shelf in the bathroom.
In his public statement, Ford said: “A total of 23 movie files were found on the hard drive, containing images which had been recorded in the bathroom at [the man's] home. These recordings had been made through the use of a small camera which had been placed on a storage shelf in the bathroom.”
He then added that a trial to decide the custody of the children was necessary at this time.
“It involved an invasion of privacy of these young ladies,” he told the court.
Michael Lutt, the lawyer representing the man, said his client was still unable to explain why he committed the crimes against his own daughters.
“It may well be it was done because he was curious to see if he could replicate the types of images he had seen himself, and there was possibly an element of chance … but essentially he’s unable to explain what it was that motivated him to engage in that behavior. He does have some insight into the wrongfulness of his conduct. His time in custody has been therapeutic and he has had a long time to reflect on it. He does sincerely regret his offending.”
The man’s two daughters and his wife all told the court that they felt embarrassed, angry and depressed at the revelation of these events. The mother and wife said that she was both shocked and horrified when she had discovered what her husband was doing. In her statement in court, she said:
“How can you be with someone I loved and trusted for 20 years to one day find out that person has lied and abused all of us for a disgusting and disturbing crime? The emotional impact this has had on me as a wife and mother was one of confusion, shock, grief, distress and embarrassment.”
The court also heard that the man had a high paying job and was the main bread winner for the family, and that the family was having difficulty paying bills and getting by without his financial assistance since his incarceration.
He is to be sentenced next month.
